What Rollups Offer

The rollup will take away the role of processing transactions from Ethereum. These networks handle transactions much faster then send them to the main chain for finality. This way, you gain from faster processing, but you still rely on Ethereum’s security.
There are two main types of rollups: optimistic rollups and zero-knowledge rollups. They take different approaches in how they process the transactions, but the goal is still to reduce pressure from the main chain and send back verifiable results.

What Sidechains Offer

Instead of relying on a tight ecosystem with a main chain, they run independently but still connect to the main chain through a bridge.
Unlike rollups, they don’t need the base layer for most of their activities. They have their own security procedures and validators, which means they can process transactions much faster.
The reason for connecting to the bridge is actually not security. The bridge helps connect the sidechains to the larger Ethereum system to allow users to access and manage their assets on the sidechain.
This approach is mainly used for applications that require more speed than security, like gaming and social media. The main trade-off is that you don’t benefit from the base-layer’s security characteristics.
Key Factors In Choosing The Right Solution
So, which is the better option?
Well, there’s really no “better” option as it all depends on the type of application.
- If your app depends heavily on security, you need a rollup. Sidechains can still be secure, but their trust models are still not as proven as chains like Ethereum.
- Sidechains will give you faster transactions and lower fees, which makes them great for high-volume apps. Rollups still offer high performance, but you may need a faster EVM as rollups largely use standard ones.
- If the app will handle high-value smart contracts, you’ll be better with a rollup as you’ll benefit from the security of your base chain. Sidechains are mostly for lower-value logics like gaming or NFTs.
- The level of integration with other ecosystems is also a major factor in choosing rollups. Since they operate more closely with Ethereum, integration is much easier.
